Missed calls cost Australian tradies jobs — what an AI receptionist can and can't do

A phone ringing while you are under a sink is not just an interruption. It might be the next job. But answering a call is only useful if the customer leaves with an accurate next step.

Pilot-stage workflows, not a claim that your line is already connected. Each business needs live acceptance.

The cost is an opportunity, not a guaranteed lost sale

A missed call can mean a customer tries someone else. It can also be a supplier, a repeat caller or a request outside your service area. Treating every missed call as a lost job exaggerates the problem. Start with your own call history: how many genuine enquiries went unanswered, how quickly did you call back, and how many turned into work?

There is no revenue uplift figure or customer success story behind this article. Eva is a pilot-stage product, and the useful question is whether a controlled trial improves your follow-up without creating extra mistakes.

What a useful AI receptionist can collect

For a plumbing or electrical business, a useful enquiry usually needs the issue, the suburb or address, a time preference and a way to call back. Eva's local workflows support messages, permission-based callback requests and appointment requests for the business to confirm. Important details should be read back so the caller can correct them.

A fictional example: a caller wants a leaking kitchen tap checked on Tuesday afternoon. The useful outcome is “call back to confirm the repair and time”, not “your plumber is booked”. This is an illustration, not a customer case study.

Answers should come from your business, not a guess

You supply and review the hours, services, coverage and FAQs. The website-import candidate can prepare source-linked drafts from explicit public information; missing or conflicting information needs your review. Imported material is not automatically approved, and website prices are not imported as permission to quote.

For a question outside approved information, the intended response is to acknowledge uncertainty and offer a colleague callback with consent. An assistant should not invent a call-out fee, promise a same-day visit or diagnose a dangerous fault.

What Eva cannot take off your hands

Your team still confirms work, handles judgement calls and keeps the business information current. An appointment request is not a confirmed booking. A saved message is not proof that a notification reached its recipient. Phone answering, colleague handoff and delivery all need to pass tests for your own setup before activation.

Eva identifies itself as AI; it should not impersonate an employee. Recording is off by default and requires separate consent. Live audio still has to be processed for a reply, so your pilot needs an appropriate privacy notice. There is no promise of unlimited usage or every call being answered.

Four checks before you forward a business number

  1. Ask a question whose answer is in your reviewed FAQ, then one that is not. Check that the second answer is honest.
  2. Change a date or address mid-conversation. Check the read-back and saved request, not just the spoken answer.
  3. Ask for a colleague. Verify the approved handoff or callback fallback; do not assume someone is always available.
  4. Agree how you will restore the original route if the pilot is unavailable.

After a trial, compare useful enquiries, incorrect answers, completed follow-ups and your time spent correcting records. Voice naturalness matters, but these are the checks that make the call useful.

Start with a small, reviewed pilot

Apply with your industry, state and a convenient contact time. The team can discuss suitability and the information you need to supply. Applying does not activate a line or book a job. See the forwarding guide before changing a carrier setting; this website will not change it for you.
